About Bearspaw First Nation
A proud Stoney Nakoda Nation — Îyârhe Nakoda, People of the Mountains — honouring Treaty 7 and our ancestral homeland in the Canadian Rockies
Stoney Nakoda Identity: Bearspaw First Nation (Nakoda: Îyârhe Nakoda) is one of three bands of the Stoney Nakoda Nations, alongside Chiniki and Wesley First Nations, based at Mînî Thnî (Morley), Alberta. The Nation is named after Chief Mâstîpíton (Bearspaw), a prominent leader who signed Treaty 7 in 1877.
Treaty & Governance: Bearspaw First Nation is a signatory to Treaty 7 (1877) and is led by Chief Darcy Dixon, re-elected to a fifth term in late 2025. The Nation operates its own governance distinct from the broader Stoney Nakoda Nations structure.
Population: Bearspaw First Nation has approximately 1,800 registered members living on and off reserve within the scenic foothills and mountain landscapes west of Calgary.
Location: Located at Mînî Thnî (Morley), Alberta, approximately 70 km west of Calgary along the Trans-Canada Highway, within the breathtaking Bow River Valley and Rocky Mountain foothills.
Culture & Economy: The Nation actively preserves the Nakoda language and traditions while pursuing economic development recognized nationally — including a Cando Economic Developer of the Year Award — with ventures in energy, tourism, and community services.
